Just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires lies one of South America’s most enchanting destinations. With its cobbled streets, colonial architecture and laid-back atmosphere, Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay is an incredible day-trip destination. I found it to be an incredible day-trip escape, offering everything from history to beautiful scenery, making it a massively refreshing contrast to the beaming and full-on capital.
Crossing the Rio de la Plata to Colonia Del Sacramento:
The journey itself is part of the experience, with the majority of people (myself included) taking the short ferry crossing, which is suprisingly smooth and scenic. There are two main companies that offer this crossing, Colonia Express and Buquebus.
Details of the crossing:
- Start point: Puerto Madero or La Boca
- Travel time: 1-1.5 hours
- Cost: Between $50 - $100 (USD)

UNESCO-listed Old Town, Main Attractions and Slow Living
The heart of Colonia del Sacramento, and perhaps the main tourist destination is its Barrio Historico, a beautifully quaint, preserved district recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Simply wondering down these uneven cobblestone streets past pastel-colored houses with no specific itinerary in mind is a treat and is part of the charm.
One of the definite highlights and must-visit attraction is the Faro de Colonia del Sacramento, the lighthouse. Climb to the top for sweeping views over the old-town’s red-tiled roofs and the shimmering Rio de la Plata. Nearby, the waterfront is perfect for a slow stroll, with the ability to stumble across restaurants perfect for a lunchtime meal with simply stunning views.
Colonia is made for lingering. Settle into a café under the shade of a tree or indulge in a relaxed lunch by the water. Clearly a stark contrast to Buenos Aires, there is no rush here, just quiet moments and simple pleasures.

Return to Buenos Aires:
As the day winds down, the return via ferry is perfect to catch the sunset over the river. In a single day, you have crossed countries, stepped through centuries of history and experiences a completely different side of this area of South America. Just a short trip across the river allows you to have exposure to a completely different, yet equally wonderful and once in a lifetime experience!
Where to eat!
1. Charco Bistro – Arguably the most iconic dining spot in the old town, with a stunning riverfront location. Incredible menu blending Uruguayan ingredients with modern techniques!
2. Resto-Morriña – One of the highest-rated restaurants in Colonia, focusing on Spanish-inspired and seafood. Perfect if you are looking for something refined but not overly formal.
3. Restaurante Pasaje las Flores – This is the true hidden gem of ‘El Barrio Historico de Colonia del Sacramento’. Hidden courtyard restaurant with the most perfect romantic and quiet atmospheres!
4. Restaurante Amor Amor – Ideal for a date-night feel, known for its romantic, cozy atmosphere with a strong mix of Uruguayan and international dishes!
5. Bohemia Bistro – Beautiful setting, especially at sunset overlooking the river with high-quality seasonal cooking!
Best Cafes in Colonia!
1. Albertine Pan y Café – Highest-rated cafes in Colonia, known for its exceptional pastries and artisanal baking; tucked away into the old town.
2. Colonia Sandwich Coffee Shop – Locals praise this café to having the best coffee, with a fantastic mix of sweet and savoury options.
3. Serrano Café – Perfect for a mid-afternoon break, with a fantastic location and high-quality products!
4. La Beduina Deli & Café – Feels like home away from home, with warm service, perfect for a more tranquil, slower-paced coffee experience.
5. Café Lattente – Great contrast to the more rustic, historic cafes with Café Lattente being a more modern, speciality coffee style café. This is the best for serious coffee lovers!
Wine in Colonia:
One thing that pleasantly surprised me in Colonia was the wine. Uruguay might not be as globally famous as Argentina or Chile for wine, but it absolutely holds its own, especially when it comes to Tannat, the country’s signature grape. It’s bold, rich, and pairs perfectly with the kind of relaxed, long lunches you’ll inevitably fall into here.
In Colonia del Sacramento, enjoying a glass of local wine feels like part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Many restaurants and cafés offer thoughtfully curated selections, and there’s something special about sipping a deep red while overlooking the Río de la Plata. It adds another layer to that slow, unhurried rhythm the town does so well, and I felt that it is one of those small details that makes the day feel just a bit more indulgent.
Colonia del Sacramento isn’t about big attractions or huge tourist traps, its about a unique and wonderful atmosphere. Its historic streets, riverside views and tranquil pace make it a rewarding and perfect escape from Buenos Aires. If you’re craving something tranquil and romantic, this small town in the corner of Uruguay will definitely be hard to beat!
